Manganinnie (1980) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Australia ]

Manganinnie is a bittersweet story based on a tragic time in Tasmania's past when, as I understand it, the European settlers decided to clear the island of the resident aborigine population. Manganinnie herself is the last surviving native of Tasmania who wants to pass on the history and lore of her people before she dies. She abducts the young daughter of one of these settlers and takes her on an odyssey across the island, imparting her knowledge to the child, despite the fact that neither speaks the other's language. Eventually, nearing death, she returns to the homestead and dies. I won't spoil your pleasure by revealing the emotional climax to the film, except to say that in never fails to bring tears to my eyes. So, not merely a rattling good story, but one with a tragic subtext and one which will surely enrich your faith in the Human spirit.

Manganinnie (1980) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Australia ]

A wonderful film showing the magnificent wilderness of Tasmania,

and beautiful story of a very young girl and the indigneous tribe of her land.

Made in Tasmania, Australia, in the 1980's and rarely seen.

It is in the national film and sound archives, but had to get my own copy from Europe.

(well worth it, treasure this film, is wonderful for young people).
